It’s the most wonderful time of the year, when the winter season begins, bringing with it the lure of markets adorned with gifts and seasonal food. But which are the best ones to get you in the full swing of the holiday season? Here is a guide to some of the best festive markets in European that are guaranteed to get you jingling all the way.

Christkindlesmarkt, Nuremberg, Germany

Germany is well known and loved for its markets with over 2,500 a year in various parts of the country. But it’s most famous and most historic market is in the old town of Bavarian which has all the Instagram worthy elements you could ask for. Adorned in lights and with stalls selling authentic locally made items, warming tipples and as much Bratwurst as you can manage, it’s a veritable slice of seasonal perfection. There is even an ice rink you can skate around, so long as you are not too tipsy from all the lovely alcohol.

Tallinn Market, Tallinn, Estonia

If you are dreaming of a white winter then Estonia is your best bet for snow, which covers its market in Tallinn each year creating the most picturesque setting for you to stroll around. The market has a more intimate feel with around 60 stalls but there is still plenty on offer from handcrafted items, traditional clothing and copious amounts of gingerbread. It is also home to Estonia’s most famous and biggest seasonal tree which sits centre stage in Raekoja Square. When viewed from the air, the venue of the market is heart-shaped and this theme continues with heart shaped trinkets festooned around the stalls.

Old Town Square Market, Prague, Czech Republic

Perhaps the most beautiful of Prague’s rather beautiful markets is the Old Town Market which is often voted one of the best in the world. It’s a feast of arts and craft stalls and delicious local street food and make sure you sample the Czech tipple Medovina, a beautiful honey, golden in colour.  As you wander round the square and take it in the twinkly lights and gorgeous scenery and the folk and dance performances you are guaranteed to get seduced into the holiday spirit.
